How Long Does It Take to See a Psychiatrist in Texas?

There is no single answer to how long it takes to see a psychiatrist in Texas, because access varies enormously across the state. In many counties, patients face long waits: the Texas Tribune reported Texans waiting on lists beyond six or seven months, and a 2023 national study found a median wait of 67 days for in-person and 43 days for telehealth psychiatric appointments. At Mynd Works Psychiatry in Austin, a membership-based private practice, scheduling is direct and appointments are generally booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Why are psychiatric appointments hard to get in Texas?

Texas has a substantial shortage of mental health professionals. As of July 2024, 246 of Texas's 254 counties were designated in whole or in part as federal mental health professional shortage areas, and federal data show Texas has the largest absolute provider gap in the country.

The Austin region is part of this picture. A September 2024 Texas DSHS presentation to the state Senate estimated Central Texas demand at about 917 full-time-equivalent mental health providers against a supply of about 565, a shortfall of roughly 38%.

How long do people typically wait?

There is no reliable statewide wait-time number, but the available research points to long waits in many places. The 2023 study noted above found that fewer than 20% of psychiatrists were accepting new patients, with median waits of 67 days in person and 43 days by telehealth. Reporting from the Texas Tribune has described waitlists beyond six or seven months in parts of the state.

Not all practices are the same, however. Direct-pay, membership-based practices like Mynd Works do not depend on insurance panels and can schedule new patients directly.

How is membership-based care different?

Mynd Works operates on a membership model with defined service levels, ongoing support, and direct access for routine questions within care boundaries. New patient evaluation appointments are arranged directly, and appointments are generally scheduled at least 48 hours in advance.

The model is concierge psychiatric care: membership funds the time, continuity, and access that crowded settings struggle to provide. This is not emergency care; for a crisis, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

How do I find out how soon I can be seen?

The most direct way is to ask. Contact the practice by phone at (512) 739-6566 or through the request form, and the team will discuss current scheduling and care options. Telehealth is available across Texas where clinically appropriate, which can also reduce travel and scheduling barriers.
