How Psychotherapy and Medication Work Together
By Kathie Bolles, PMHNP-BC
Psychotherapy and medication are not either/or choices; for many people they work best together. Psychotherapy builds insight and skills, while medication, when appropriate, can reduce symptoms enough to make therapy work better. At Mynd Works Psychiatry in Austin, Texas, both are offered under one roof, which means they are coordinated rather than fragmented.
What does each approach do best?
Psychotherapy helps you understand the patterns behind your distress and build lasting skills for managing them. It addresses the why and the how of change.
Medication, when appropriate, can reduce the intensity of symptoms such as low mood, panic, or intrusive thoughts, which can make the work of therapy more achievable. Neither replaces the other.
Why does coordination matter?
When therapy and medication are managed by separate providers, information can get lost. At Mynd Works, the same practice holds both threads: observations from therapy inform medication decisions, and medication experience informs therapy.
That shared picture makes treatment more coherent and prevents the all-too-common problem of treatments working at cross purposes.
Do I have to choose one or the other?
No. Some people benefit from therapy alone, some from medication alone, and many from both. The decision is made collaboratively during your evaluation and can change over time as your situation evolves.
How long does combined treatment take?
Therapy typically unfolds over months, and medication, when started, may take weeks to show measurable benefit. Mynd Works tracks progress with measurement-based tools so the combined plan is adjusted based on evidence.
Common questions
Does Mynd Works provide both therapy and medication management?
Yes. Psychotherapy and psychiatric services are two of the three core areas of care, and they are designed to be coordinated within one practice.
Can I do therapy only?
Yes. Some people pursue psychotherapy without medication. The approach is decided collaboratively during evaluation.
Will my therapist and prescriber communicate?
At Mynd Works they are part of the same practice and the same treatment picture, so coordination is built in rather than left to faxes and voicemails.
