What Does a Psychiatric Evaluation Include?
By Kathie Bolles, PMHNP-BC
A psychiatric evaluation is a thorough clinical interview designed to understand what you are experiencing and why, before any treatment is recommended. It covers current symptoms, personal and family history, medical factors, sleep, substance use, and prior treatment. At Mynd Works Psychiatry in Austin, Texas, the evaluation is unhurried and collaborative, and it forms the foundation of a personalized treatment plan.
What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?
The evaluation is a conversation, not a questionnaire gauntlet. Your clinician asks about the problem that brought you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your days.
It also covers the context around the problem: sleep, appetite, energy, physical health, medications and supplements, substances, stressful life events, and any previous mental health treatment or diagnosis.
How long does an evaluation take?
At Mynd Works, the initial evaluation is designed to be thorough enough to be useful. Because appointments are structured around depth, there is time to explore what matters rather than racing to a conclusion.
Will I be asked for a diagnosis?
A diagnostic impression may be part of the outcome, but the goal is understanding, not labeling. The clinician will explain what they see, what it does and does not mean, and how the recommended plan follows from it.
You are never required to accept a diagnosis you do not understand or agree with.
What comes after the evaluation?
You and your clinician build a treatment plan together: goals, options, and next steps, including psychotherapy, medication where appropriate, lifestyle considerations, and how progress will be tracked.
At Mynd Works, that plan is then measured. Follow-up visits use structured tools so adjustments are driven by evidence about what is actually changing.
