What to Expect at Your First Psychiatry Appointment
By Kathie Bolles, PMHNP-BC
Your first psychiatry appointment at Mynd Works is an initial evaluation: an unhurried conversation about your concerns, your history, and your goals. There is no wrong way to show up, and you are not expected to have everything figured out. By the end, you should understand the clinician's perspective and the shape of a possible treatment plan, with the decision fully in your hands.
How should I prepare?
Bring a list of current medications and supplements, any records you want to share, and the questions you most want answered. It can also help to spend a few minutes thinking about what has changed recently and what you would most like to be different.
Preparation is helpful but not required. The clinician is trained to work with whatever level of detail you are ready to share.
What happens during the appointment?
The appointment is a structured but conversational interview. Expect to talk about your current symptoms, when they began, your medical and psychiatric history, sleep, energy, appetite, substances, and the practical impact on work, school, and relationships.
There will also be time for your questions. A good evaluation is a dialogue, not an interrogation.
Will I leave with a treatment plan?
Typically, yes, at least in outline. The clinician will share their impression, explain the reasoning, and propose next steps, whether that is psychotherapy, medication management, further assessment, or a period of watchful waiting.
Nothing is prescribed or committed to without your understanding and agreement.
What if the practice is not the right fit?
Then that is useful information. Mynd Works is committed to being candid about fit, and if another level of care or another provider would serve you better, the clinician will say so directly.
Common questions
How long is the first appointment?
The initial evaluation at Mynd Works is designed to be thorough enough to build an accurate picture, and appointments are structured around depth rather than volume.
Do I have to start medication at the first visit?
No. Medication is never started without a collaborative discussion and your agreement, and it is not required for every patient.
Is the first appointment in person or by telehealth?
Both are available. The clinician will confirm which is clinically appropriate for your situation.
