ADHD and Depression: How They Overlap and What to Know

ADHD and depression commonly co-occur in adults. CHADD reports that adults with ADHD are up to six times more likely to experience depression than adults without ADHD, and depression is one of the most common conditions that co-occurs with ADHD. Because the two can look similar, a careful evaluation is important to understand what is driving your symptoms and to build a treatment plan that addresses both. Mynd Works Psychiatry in Austin, Texas evaluates adult ADHD and depression, in person and by telehealth.

How common is the overlap?

Co-occurrence is common. NIMH notes that ADHD often co-occurs with other conditions, including depression and other mood disorders, and that these must be factored into diagnosis and treatment.

CHADD reports that a substantial share of adults with ADHD also have a co-occurring mood disorder, which is why the overlap is a routine part of adult ADHD evaluation.

Why do ADHD and depression co-occur?

The relationship is complex. Living with unmanaged ADHD can contribute to chronic stress, frustration, and low self-esteem, which may increase the risk of depression. There may also be shared biological and genetic factors.

Whatever the cause, the practical point is that both conditions are common, can influence each other, and are best understood together.

How can the two be told apart?

ADHD involves persistent patterns of inattention, disorganization, and difficulty with follow-through. Depression involves persistent low mood, loss of interest, low energy, and changes in sleep or appetite.

The two can blur: someone with ADHD may feel overwhelmed and discouraged, and someone with depression may struggle to concentrate. A careful history helps the clinician distinguish what is driving what.

How is the evaluation done?

Evaluation begins with a detailed clinical interview covering your symptoms, their timeline, and how they show up across work, home, and relationships. The clinician reviews co-occurring conditions, including anxiety, depression, and mood disorders, because these frequently overlap with ADHD.

This is the same careful process used for any psychiatric evaluation.

How are they treated together?

Treatment addresses both conditions, often in combination. This may include medication management, psychotherapy, and practical strategies for structure and follow-through.

The plan is individualized and reviewed over time, so it can be adjusted based on what is actually helping.

Common questions

Can ADHD be mistaken for depression?

Yes. Chronic overwhelm and frustration from unmanaged ADHD can look like low mood, and depression can cause concentration problems that look like ADHD. A careful evaluation helps distinguish the two.

Can you have both ADHD and depression?

Yes. ADHD and depression commonly co-occur in adults, and both should be considered in evaluation and treatment.

Does Mynd Works treat ADHD and depression together?

Yes. Mynd Works evaluates and treats adult ADHD and depression, and because the two often overlap, a coordinated plan addresses both, in person in Austin or by secure telehealth where clinically appropriate.
