Psychotherapy vs. Psychiatric Care: What Is the Difference?

By Kathie Bolles, PMHNP-BC

Psychiatric care and psychotherapy are related but different. Psychiatric care takes a medical perspective, focusing on evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management when appropriate. Psychotherapy is a structured talking treatment that works with thoughts, emotions, and behaviors over time. At Mynd Works Psychiatry in Austin, Texas, both are offered in one practice, which means they can be coordinated instead of fragmented.

What does psychiatric care involve?

Psychiatric care begins with a thorough evaluation covering symptoms, history, medical factors, sleep, and substances. From that foundation, it includes treatment planning, medication management where appropriate, and ongoing monitoring of how treatment is working.

The medical perspective matters for understanding how physical health, medications, and mental health interact, and for considering what is and is not contributing to your experience.

What does psychotherapy involve?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative talking treatment for emotional and behavioral patterns. Approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) help people understand and change the thinking and behavior cycles that keep problems going, while other modalities focus on insight, relationships, or processing difficult experiences.

At Mynd Works, psychotherapy services are integrated with psychiatric care rather than delivered in a separate silo.

How are the two different?

The clearest difference is focus and method. Psychiatric care is medical: it evaluates, may arrive at a diagnosis, and manages medications when appropriate. Psychotherapy is relational and skill-based: it works with how you think, feel, and behave, often over the course of many sessions.

They also answer different questions. Psychiatric care asks what is happening and what treatment makes sense; psychotherapy asks how patterns developed and how to change them.

Do you have to choose one?

No. For many people the two work best together, which is why coordinated treatment can be more effective than either alone. Some people use psychotherapy only, some medication only, and many use both.

The right combination is decided during your evaluation, with your preferences at the center.

Common questions

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in mental health, focused on evaluation and medication. A psychotherapist provides structured talk therapy. At Mynd Works, care is led by the founder, Kathie Bolles, PMHNP-BC, and both psychiatric care and psychotherapy are available within the practice.

Can I do psychotherapy only?

Yes. Some people pursue psychotherapy without medication. The approach is decided collaboratively during evaluation.

Does psychotherapy count as psychiatric care?

Psychotherapy is one component of psychiatric care but not the whole of it. Comprehensive psychiatric care also includes evaluation, treatment planning, and medication management where appropriate.
